Unlike many teenagers nowadays, I love to read, study, and take notes. Reading is my favorite way to gain knowledge, and note taking helps cement it into my brain. Topics I enjoy reading are things are either very thick, information-filled books about science, or an inspiring story filled with adventure and epiphany. To me, science is the key to understanding the universe, so whenever I feel out of place I like to read a science book. An inspiring story makes me eager to try great things and follow my biggest dreams. I could never put down one of those books, but sometimes I’m hungry for something new; something with awe-inspiring storytelling, or something that gets right to the point about a subject.
To me, a good book can’t be stuffed with extra words; It should get to the point, but make it interesting. A great example of this is “Born To Run” by Christopher McDougall. I love this book not just because it’s about running, but because it combines a great story with useful information, without being too wordy. That’s why it’s one of my favorite books of all time, as it makes you want to continue reading to see what comes next. I seriously could not put down that book, it was that good. So, I would like something similar to that, about a topic I enjoy. But what topic would I like to learn more about?
Well, I’m a gardener, runner, swimmer, biker, camper, writer, mathematician, scientist, and handy-man. These are all things that I love to learn about, because they apply directly to my life. I wouldn’t want to read something about walruses – I’ve never even seen one in person. If there was a book about swimming that was similar to “Born To Run”, then I would be jumping up and down and screaming. Swimming is my #1 favorite sport, and I would love to read a thrilling and enticing story about it. A camping book would be really nice too. A guide containing information about camping equipment, the best spots, and even how to set up a tent would be a must-read for me. A book about writing would be phenomenal, too. I strive to make my writing keep your eyes glued to the screen, and maybe even put a smile on your face or inform you of something you’ve wanted to learn forever. If there’s a book that can teach me to do that better, then I’d check it out immediately.
Whenever I learn something new, it just makes me feel alive. I feel so motivated to do something, and I feel like I find my place in the world when I learn about it. To me, the brain is a sponge, and books are pitchers full of water. It sounds strange, but learning is what I’m passionate about.
