Fish is extremely important to many diets because it is an excellent source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. Fish is also much easier to harvest than to hunt larger land animals, because significantly less energy is needed to pull a fish from water than to hunt for a large animal.

What is seafood? Well, seafood is a cheap, healthy food that you can easily incorporate into your diet. Any animal that lives in water, and that is caught for consumption, is considered seafood. This includes things like fish, lobster, crabs, shrimp, scallops, mussels, clams, and oysters. Most of those things can be quite expensive because they are quite difficult to catch, or only live in certain areas of the world. However, there are plenty of other ways to get cheap seafood. A 12 ounce can of tuna at Walmart costs $3.24, while a 1.25 pound fillet of salmon costs $8.79. This is a significant price difference, meaning that getting seafood for cheap is fairly easy. Looks like you won’t have to get a bank loan to afford dinner.

Why is seafood good for you?
Seafood is super healthy. It’s one of the most nutrient rich foods on the planet. It is a complete protein, meaning it contains every single one of the essential amino acids that your body cannot produce by itself. Seafood contains plenty of vitamins and minerals that benefit the body. Oysters, for example, contain Zinc, Copper, Iron Selenium, Vitamin D, and Vitamin B12. Consuming these minerals can prevent macular degeneration, a condition that causes problems with your retina, which can lead to permanent vision damage. Another seafood that is exceptionally healthy is Salmon. It contains plenty of Omega-3 Fatty Acids, which can support healthy brain function, plenty of Vitamin D, which can promote strong bones, and plenty of B vitamins, which can help you feel energized. It’s definitely a good idea to get more seafood in your diet, considering all of the amazing health benefits that it provides.

How can I get more seafood in my diet?
Seafood can be incorporated into almost any diet, unless you are allergic or have no desire to eat meat or animal products. In any dish, seafood can be used as the protein. Try adding shrimp to your stir fry instead of chicken or beef, try fish tacos, or even make a smoked salmon dip! Be aware of seafood’s potent flavor, though. If it’s too strong for your taste, there are so many different options to try! Some seafood tastes “fishier” than others, which means you will have to find something that fits your palate.
An simple way to get more seafood in your diet is to buy canned fish. It can be quite high in sodium, so check if there are lower sodium options at your store. I love adding canned tuna or sardines to a salad. Sometimes I will put sardines on my pasta or in a soup. Canned tuna can also be used in casseroles, sushi, or in a sandwich. There are endless possibilities with seafood, so get creative with it, and find something that you enjoy!

Is eating seafood better than other types of meat?
Eating seafood is a controversial topic in today’s world. Over fishing contributes to many global climate issues, and causes ocean fish populations to trend downwards. More fish are caught than are born, making the species decline. Other animals can also get killed by fishing. They can get trapped in fishing nets, choking to death. However, seafood is still more sustainable for the planet. Eating seafood may release significantly less carbon into the air than other farming practices. Because farm animals need land to survive, forests are cut down to provide that space. Cows also release tons of methane and carbon dioxide into the air, harmful chemicals that pollute the atmosphere. Eating less land animals and more seafood can help prevent deforestation and air pollution, leading to a cleaner and healthier planet.
